What you’re staring at are the “kidney’s” from a fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) and they are loaded with calcium oxalate stones. This isn’t a genetic model, more of a nutrient-induced model. The green signal is the autofluorescence generated by the “kidneys” (lasso like structures) and the gut (that tire in the middle). The white signal is the depolarized light caused by the calcium oxalate crystals present within the malphigian tubules (kidneys). We (Sohrab and I) opened up the pinhole on this image allowing us to get more crystals that were out of airy unit imaging depth. Hopefully we get this manuscript out soon!
