I am excited to officially announce that I will become the new Director of Urology Research at the Mayo Clinic.
This marks a new period of Translational Research in the Department of Urology and it’s relationship with the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center. The goal of our unit is extremely clear: to fundamentally change and improve clinical outcomes for prostate, kidney, bladder and testicular cancer patients and to augment the research capabilities of all other cancer research efforts at the Mayo Clinic.
This move could not be possible without those who helped along the way. Namely, Dr. Nicholas Power, Dr. Ann Chambers and Dr. Hassan Razvi. As a wise colleague told me earlier today, “our research is beyond borders and we should always continue on in our work together”. I deeply appreciate Prostate Cancer Canada (Joanne Reynolds, Dr. Stuart Edmonds, and Dr. Jenna Fong) for their incredible support – without PCC, none of this is possible. I also want to shout out massive big ups to Movember Canada (Pete Bombaci, Jesse Hayman) for also making my career possible. I’m always in awe of the fact that my career was launched by one of the most incredible prostate cancer fund raising events ever. How often does something like that happen?
In my recruitment process with the Mayo Clinic, the entire journey could have been made into a movie – it was a time I will never ever forget. I truly felt like a rock star and in some way that period has changed my core being and has helped me transform into what many patients need: an inventor and scientist focused on biomedical discoveries in cancer and urology.
We face a very long transition period and while we will lose some people, we will see new members lead our charge to elevate the level of Urology Research to an altitude not seen before at Mayo Clinic. Sounds extremely ambitious and ridiculous but all I can say is “watch this space”!!!
Thank you Eva (my wife), my mom, Nick Power and Ann Chambers. Thank you for everything.
Lastly, thank you to the Mayo Clinic for what will be an exciting time for patients and my fellow co-workers!
